ad·ap·ta·tion n. 1. a. The state of being adapted. b. The act or process of adapting. 2. Something that is changed or changes so as to become suitable to a new or special use or situation. 3. An alteration of adjustment, often hereditary, by which a species or individual improves its condition in relationship to its environment. 4. The responsive alteration of a sense organ to repeated stimuli. 5. Change in behavior of an individual or group in adjustment to new or modified cultural surroundings.
